HICKOX – Lyman Robert “Bobby” Rowell, Jr., 77 of Hickox, passed away Monday morning, March 2, 2020 at his residence after an extended illness.
Born in Waycross, Rowell’s parents were Lyman Rowell and Margie Blocker Rowell. He is also preceded in death by his grandparents, Clifford and Ruth Rowell, and Patrick and Anna Wainright Blocker.
Rowell retired after 27 years from the Federal Aviation Administration and served in the Army National Guard for six years where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant. He turned his hobby and passion for beekeeping into a successful Honey Farm for 37 years until his bad health forced him to retire.
Over the years, Rowell served on several County boards including the Development Authority, Tax Assessor, the County Commission and the Georgia Farm Bureau Honeybee Commodity Board. He also served as the president of Brantley County Farm Bureau for 17 years, president of the Southeast Beekeepers Association and president of the Georgia Beekeepers Association.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, JoAnn Howard Rowell of Hickox; two children, Sonya Lynn Rowell Baker of Buford, Ga., and United States Air Force Colonel Robert Joseph Rowell (Staci) of Prattville, Ala.; four grandchildren, Jordan Baker (Will Sexton) of Gainesville, Ga., Jared Baker of Buford, and Anna Rowell and Emily Rowell of Prattville, Ala.; great-grandchild, Solara Sexton of Gainesville, Ga.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Billy Rowell (Wanda) and Pat Rowell (Patsy) all of Hickox; a mother-in-law, Myrtice Howard of Macon; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
A funeral service was held Friday afternoon, March 6, 2020 at Hickox Baptist Church with Rev. Jamie Giddens and Rev. Phillip Rowell officiating.
Burial followed in New Hope Cemetery. Pallbearers were Patrick Rowell, Dean Rowell, Chris Crews, Charles Edgy, G.W. Knox, Claude Edgy, Larry Johns and Skipper Howard.
Honorary pallbearers were Brantley Co. Farm Bureau Board of Directors and Tyrus Manning, David Lee, Gary Paulk, Daniel Johnson, John Hilton, and Lawarence Melton.
