WOODBINE — E. Lorraine August Lewis of Woodbine passed peacefully April 17, 2020 into the arms of Jesus in her home surrounded by her family. Mrs. Lewis was born March 9, 1929 in Hickox to Amanda Frances Collins and Charles August Sr. As a young girl she lived in Thunderbolt on the Savannah River where her father was a shrimper. The family moved to Brunswick just before Mrs. Lewis started first grade. During her childhood, she worked tending her family’s tobacco farm and their many animals. Mrs. Lewis worked in many jobs over her 91 years. Most notably were her jobs at Hercules, Gilman Paper Company, Thiokol, Union Carbide, and Rhône Poulenc where she ultimately retired. At 60 years old, she volunteered to attend the San Antonio Fire Training Academy where she was trained and certified as a chemical firefighter for Union Carbide. After Mrs. Lewis retired, she was able to travel the world as she had always dreamed and even lived in Germany for a few years. Mrs. Lewis ultimately returned to Woodbine and settled once more where she has remained. Her greatest joy has always been her children and her grandchildren. Mrs. Lewis devoted her entire life to her family and selflessly put them first in her life. She gave of herself to her friends, her church family, and anyone who may need a hand. “No” was never in her vocabulary. Mrs. Lewis was a member of the Woodbine United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her son, Robert (Bobby) Owen Powell, and her brother, Charles August. She is survived by her three children, Donna Kelly, Roger Lewis (Donna), Edie Lewis (Larry); 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held Saturday, April 25, 2020. In lieu of flowers, the family request memorial donations be made to Hospice of Golden Isles, 1692 Glynco Parkway, Brunswick, GA, 31525 or The Alzheimer’s Association, 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL, 60601. Allison Memorial Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.
